Who’s behind it
Good Faith Hiring was started, and is maintained, by Future Tech Jobs, which runs job boards for UK technology roles. We wrote it because we see both sides of the problem every day: adverts that hide the salary, and applications sent without reading the advert.
Before version 1.0, we’re asking two people from outside Future Tech Jobs to review it: someone who leads hiring in-house, and a careers adviser or candidate advocate. Their names will appear here once they’ve agreed.
Our interest, stated plainly
Future Tech Jobs is a business, and employers pay it to advertise. So you should know where we stand:
- Following the standard is never a condition of advertising with Future Tech Jobs, and employers who don’t follow it are never ranked lower.
- Any employer can adopt it, wherever they advertise. The adopters list is open to everyone on the same terms.
- Future Tech Jobs is listed like anyone else, after the same check of its own adverts.
- Where Future Tech Jobs shows the badge on its own boards, it says that Future Tech Jobs maintains the standard.
How the commitments change
The commitments are written in the open on GitHub.
- Anyone can propose a change in GitHub Discussions, or by emailing hello@goodfaithhiring.co.uk.
- A maintainer turns agreed proposals into a change you can preview.
- Changes to commitment wording or figures need a reviewer’s approval, and are listed on the changes page.
Each commitment has a permanent ID, such as GFH-E1 for employers and GFH-C1 for candidates. IDs never change, even when the wording does.
This is Draft 1, published for comment. After the comment period and the reviewers’ sign-off, it becomes version 1.0. Small wording fixes after that are 1.1, 1.2 and so on. A changed figure or a new commitment makes version 2.0. Each version keeps its own permanent web address, so “we follow version 1.0” always points to the same text.
Reporting an employer
If an employer on the adopters list isn’t keeping to the commitments, email reports@goodfaithhiring.co.uk. Please don’t post about named employers or people on GitHub or anywhere public.
What happens next:
- We read every report and keep it private. Tell us what happened and which commitment it relates to. You don’t have to name anyone at the employer.
- We contact the employer, without naming you unless you agree, and give them a chance to reply.
- If it isn’t sorted out within 20 working days, two maintainers decide whether the employer stays on the list.
- If they’re removed, the list says only that they’re “no longer listed”. We don’t publish reasons or name anyone.
- We keep reports for 2 years after they’re closed, then delete them.
Removal from the list is the only step we take. We can’t investigate complaints about hiring decisions, and we’re not a substitute for Acas or legal advice.
Using the text
The commitments are free to copy and adapt under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Credit “Good Faith Hiring” with a link to this site, and say if you changed anything.
The name “Good Faith Hiring” and the badge aren’t covered by that licence. You can say you follow the commitments, but please don’t present an adapted version as the official standard. The badge terms explain when you can use the badge.
